Harry Caray was a sports announcer. His career spanned 50 years on both radio and television calling for 4 different teams over his career.

While playing minor league baseball at the age of 19, Caray auditioned for a radio announcer job. He would train for the next 3 years so he can be a radio announcer. He would call games for the St Louis Hawks, now Atlanta Hawks, professional basketball team, the Missouri University football team, and 3 Cotton Bowls.

Caray got his break at the age of 31 when he was chosen as the St Louis Cardinals radio announcer. He would spend his longest tenure here, serving 25 years. He was the biggest promoter for the Cardinals and was a fan favorite. He called 3 World Series during his time there, 1964, 1967, and 1968. This was his first stint with television as he called these for NBC and not the radio. After the 1969 season, Caray was unexpectedly fired as the Cardinals announcer by owner Augustus Busch. Rumors had it that Caray was having an affair with Busch's daughter. Caray would say it was a business decision but never decline the affair. Radio partner Jack Buck would take over the job.

Caray would except the job as Oakland Athletics announcer but only spent 1 year there. Caray said that he didnt like Athletics owner Finley's interference with him and the team. Finley said that Caray was too loose with his comments and needed a more conservative announcer.

In 1971, he excepted a job in southside Chicago as the radio announcer for the Chicago White Sox. Again, he was a fan favorite. He would walk through the stands meeting and geeting fans. He was known for hanging out with fans in the stands with no shirt on while hes calling the game. But, he was not a favorite with the owner and the players. He went through countless radio partners but was unhappy with them all. During games, he would be very critical of the players when they make an error or are hitting a cold streak. This would cause unhappiness and force Caray out after 11 season.

He would moved to the north side of Chicago where he excepted a job as the announcer for Chicago Cubs. His advantage was that the Cubs had their own television company, WGN. Caray would now call games on television. The good thing about WGN, was that they were world wide, so people in Los Angelas to New York watched the Cubs. This would make Caray an American icon for the next 15 years he was announcer for the Cubs. Again, he was a fan favorite with fans but also with ownership and players. He would invite celebrities into the booth every game and interview them, something that is till done today. He would also lead everybody in the singing of take me out to the ballgame at every home game.

i graduated with my MISLT from UM Columbia in 2003. after the ceremonies, i found my family and Alaana comes runnin' hard & fast to find me. i scoop her up in my arms, and all of a sudden her smile disappears; she starts staring at me and gets very quiet. here's the conversation...
me: Hi, Alaana!
Alaana: (softly) Hi.
me, a little worried: How are you?
Alaana, still softly: Fine.
(a couple of seconds of silence)
me: ...You wanna wear my hat, don't you?
Alaana: YEAH!!!!!

few things are more adorable than 2 year olds who know what they want. :-)
